We just completed a NASCOE Legislative Team conference call. Although we don't any breaking news, the general feeling is that there is very little negotiations going on now and that it is not likely we'll see a re-opening of the government this week. However, with the debt limit deadline coming up on October 17, it is very likely this could force some serious negotiations.
Currently, the bill passed by the House this weekend, to provide back pay for furloughed federal employees, is not on the Senate calendar. However, it is likely to be added to the calendar this week and is expected to pass the Senate and be signed by the President. The fact that there is obvious bi-partisan support for this bill is very good for federal employees.
Hunter Moorhead, NASCOE's Legislative Consultant, encouraged us to tell our members that every phone call, email, or personal contact makes a difference. The Southeast Area has had some very good participation from our members in sending Capwiz messages. However, we can not stop at this. If you've send a Capwiz message, follow up with a personal email to your congressional members and then follow up with that by placing a phone call to their offices.
If you have access to Facebook, I would encourage you to stay up to date by visiting the NASCOE News Facebook page. NASCOE's website (www.nascoe.org) is also being updated frequently with the most current information. As we get more information, we'll be sure to get it out ASAP.
Thanks for everything you are doing!
